When you have a great player, you need to find ways to take advantage of his skills and find ways to allow him to help your team make plays. One of the best tight ends I have ever had the privilege of coaching was Avery Wood. Avery wound up being our QB in 2013 and was the backup QB in 2011 and 2012, but was a fantastic player, a ferocious blocker and too good to sit on the bench as a backup QB. He had to play!
We utilized Avery in the Power Spread Offense in 2012 as a TE, but also as a floating wing/fullback in order to outnumber people at the point of attack. The package was set up to have the defense declare a strength to the TE and then motion him to become a wing on the other side that would effectively kick out for power, seal the back side for counter, fake kick out into Slam pass and just as a decoy. Using our formation and motion system in the power spread, it was very simple to make this happen and was extremely effective in helping our team win back to back district titles for the first time in school history.
Below is Avery's highlight film with some examples of this package. Bear with the first couple plays, the TE package begins at the 1 Minute mark if you want to fast forward to that point.
